About the Author
Helen MacInnes (1907-1985) was the Scottish-born American author of 21 spy novels. Dubbed "the queen of spy writers", her books have sold more than 25 million copies in the United States alone and have been translated into over 22 languages. Several of her books have been adapted into films, such as Above Suspicion (1943), with Joan Crawford, and The Salzburg Connection (1972).

A Classic Thriller

This was the second Helen MacInnes book I ever read (in the 1970s, when I was a teen), and it started me reading all the rest of her novels. I was a big fan of Ludlum and le Carré, and I quickly added her to my list of Must-Reads. When these books were first published (NORTH FROM ROME is from 1958), she was the only woman in the espionage writing business, and her female perception of the shadowy world of spies and intrigue is really interesting. I've just reread several of her books, including this one, and they're very dated now--she has a real fear of "the Communists" that seems out of place in the 21st century--but they haven't lost any of their excitement and charm. Yes, charm--it's the only word for it. Her hero and heroine are solid, witty, capable people, and her villains are appropriately dastardly. The plot starts out in high gear--a woman is rescued from assassins on page 3--and the pace never slows down.

Helen MacInnes's books were out of print for a long time, but now they're all being reissued in paperback and as ebooks (Yay!), and I intend to read them all again. She's a good writer with attractive characters, vivid settings, and solid plots. Highly recommended.

Not her best, maybe her worst. One to avoid unless you collect Helen M books like I do.

Not her best work. I wonder if this was her last book or if it was written in a hurry because her usual writing style is far better. She is usually crisp in wording and plot lines, with well drawn characters that keep you in suspense thru the whole book. Not so with this. The plot is very dated but so is a lot of her work, so that isn't why I am giving this a 2 star, rather than her usual 5 star books, it's just boring.

Still it is Helen M and I love her work so this is part of the collection but if you are wondering to get it or another Helen M, get any other of her suspense books.Above Suspicion, or Agent in Place. That one is very current in it's exploration of someone who is a "leaker" for ethical reasons who slowly but surely finds out his leak of classified info has very different consequences than he imagined. I kept thinking of the Snowden case and the Wikileaks case.

Excellent read

Helen MacInnes is an excellent writer, combining very believable plots and characters with romance. She is clear and unambiguous about the aims of communism and its methods. Its also a nostalgiac look at a time when western allies had principles and a vision of society that valued freedom above all.

Not Mick Foley, But Not The Rock Either

This book is at it's best when Steve is being himself instead of the Stone Cold character. Unlike The Rock's book, this one is a bit more honest and not in character every moment. Still not written with as much honesty as Mick Foley's bios (Have A Nice Day & Foley Is Good and coming soon Hardcore Diaries). JR (Jim Ross) helps out mostly at the end of chapters and his insight is very helpful. Without JR this book would be a 2 or 3 stars. Not too much is said that isn't common knowledge, so I recommend this book for the more die-hard Stone Cold fans. This won't appeal to mainstream non-wrestling fans the way Mick Foley's books did.

The Toughest S.O.B. in Sports Entertainment!

Stone Cold Steve Austin was always one of my favorite wrestlers from the Attitude Era of the WWE, he was crude, he was blunt, he was tough, he was cool, and he didn't take lip from anyone, even his own boss. Well that's kinda the character I was expecting when I was reading this book. However as we all know, the people who play these characters are not these characters in real life, they are sports entertainers. I think that's why I was let down when I read this book, I wanted one thing but got another.

I'll admit that I liked finding out the history of Steve Austin, whose real name is Steve Williams. It was neat to find out he was a hell raiser as a kid and a young adult, but let's face it we were all that way to a certain degree when we were younger. We find out he dropped of college, got a job and then pursued wrestling and developed a few characters until he found his niche as Stone Cold Steve Austin.

This book just didn't really grab me as well as Mankind's book or The Rock's book did. This was was for lack of a better term, just kinda boring. It's always good to find out the real story behind a wrestler but I guess Steve's story just didn't interest me like the others did. It's still a good book and it's informative. Fans of Stone Cold will really like it and I highly recommend it for them and the hardcore wrestling fans. Casual fans like myself may not like it as much.

A simple tale that became a great movie

It's a bit hard to believe that Kevin Costner turned such a simply written book into such a wonderfully sophisticated film. But that's exactly what happened.

Michael Blake's book reads as though it was written for a junior high and high school audience. That doesn't stop it from being a well-done tale of life on the prairie in 19th-century America, although why Costner made his Indians Sioux instead of Commanche as written by Blake is beyond me.

Aside from that difference, Costner obviously followed Blake's novel almost to the letter; I felt as if I was seeing the movie all over again. But Blake's writing style is something of a disappointment. After seeing the movie I was expecting a much more detailed story of John Dunbar's transformation into Dances With Wolves - something on the order of James Clavell's "Shogun". If you picked this book up looking for information on how Native Americans lived back in their glory days I suggest you look elsewhere. But if you're looking for a well done Western this is the book for you.

Shook-mani-took-tonka Oh wachi

The Costner movie based on this book is one of my favorite movies ever, so it was only natural for me to pick this book when I saw it. As most would agree, the movie is NEVER as good as the book, so I quickly surmised that, since the movie was fabulous, the book must reach vast unknown limits of greatness, right? Well, not exactly. Michael Blake's writing of DANCES WITH WOLVES is certainly a good book and a wonderful story, it is Costner's ability to turn this story into such a brilliant production that is the real achievement here.

I have found that normally, if I like a movie and read the book afterwards, it serves to enhance what I saw on film. In this case, however, the book had somewhat the opposite effect for me. There are differences between the two that only seem to diminish Costner's work. A couple of things I knew already, such as Costner's use of the Indian Chief, Ten Bears, who I knew to have been a great Comanche, not a Sioux.

Well, as it turns out, the book is written to that effect. The Indians befriended by Lt. Dunbar and portrayed in the movie as Sioux, are actually Comanche. Now I can understand the alteration here, for a couple of reasons. First of all, though most Americans are notoriously ignorant of our rich history, for the most part, people do know the Comanche were the badest of the bad and it would be an increased degree of difficulty to portray the Comanche in a positive light as being rather passive and wanting only to be left alone to live in peace. Though the Sioux were hardly any more docile, their reputation is certainly not nearly as notorious. Also, for cinematic reasons, it's certainly understandable that the domain of the northern Sioux is a more picturesque backdrop that the barren plains of the Southern Comanche. Also, the Sioux language of the movie has a more poetic feel to it and is somewhat more widely recognized than the rather obscure Shoshonean spoken by the Comanche.

I hope I haven't given the wrong impression here. This is a very enjoyable read, though it is a rare occasion where the book was not nearly as enjoyable, for me at least, as was the movie.

My Favorite Book!

"Dances With Wolves",by Michael Blake, reveals an exciting story about the war for territory between the Native Americans and Settlers. If you enjoy stories about the West this book is an excellent choice. It depicts the frontier from the viewpoint of Native Amerians. Moreover the reader is invited to experience the constant pressure that was placed on the Native Americans by the Settlers. The main character, Lieutenant John Dunbar, who was originally sympathetic to the early Settlers, joins a Native American tribe. This shift is what makes this story so unusual and unique, because the antagonists in the book become the protagonists. In the beginning of the story the author depicts Indians as the antagonists, when the warriors from Pawnee tribe kill Timmons, Lieutenant Dunbar's escort. The reader gets an impression that all of the Native Americans are evil and cruel savages. However further into the book, Indians become the protagonists when the Comanche make peace with Dunbar, and they are described as victims of colonization.
The love story between Dunbar and "Stands With A Fist",a unique Comanche white woman, makes the book even more interesting. This book is a great example of American literature and I would recommend it to everyone.
