More ricklets, bigger and better

Wow, wonder ricklets this time! Craze's adventures continue, the new tavern, his need to prove himself worthy, his weird and wonderful associates and trusted friends... Well done, M. Pax. Book 3 of your series is certainly not a disappointment. I am left to wonder if Craze will ever achieve his goals.
Just when the dust settles on Pardeep, the Lepper opens up and tourists flock in, Craze has yet another hurdle to leap. His family. The very people who betrayed him on his home planet, kicked him out.
Word has spread that Craze is a success, and now he's besieged by his own people who have nowhere else to go.
But that's all I dare say.
If you haven't read any of the Backworlds series, please do so now.
Entertaining, easy reads. Characters are more fleshed-out, pacing is great.
Keep the series coming, please, M. Pax. I await book 4.

Sci-Fi with Heart, Humor and Imagination

In Boomtown Craze, Craze has grown from being a Candide-esque innocent to a lovable, but sharp realist. Plenty of bad things still happen to him: his tavern tables get delivered in all the wrong colors, his obnoxious, user family arrives just as he is finally making it big in the tourist trade; yet Craze has learned how to play hard. He has grown quite suave with women. For instance, he's able to make a strategic decision to forgo seducing the young lady of his choice in order to flatter and charm that girl's mother, who has planetary power and a massive crop of Wonder Ricklets, a sort of small bovine type herd that he wants in on. I enjoyed the scenes where we get glimpses of his sexual charm. One of the women is a Sprinkler, a blue-hued race that sloughs off mist and a continual drizzle that, on this dry and dusty moon of Pardeep definitely has its benefits!
I love Pax's inventive side: the way the characters' hair curls and swirls and has its very own life; the beautiful yet toxic plants of Photwit and the nanite-laced chocolates that one can control a subject's mind with when offered as a treat. M Pax has true imagination and humor, and the prose just keeps getting better and better. I'm a fan.

Another great entry in the Backworlds series

The Backworlds series gets better and better with each book. I love the way the character of Craze has grown and developed through the series, he's become quite a charmer here and a fun companion to have as we journey through the Backworlds.

As always I am in awe of Pax's imagination. You have to love the Wonder Ricklets! I am anxiously awaiting the release of Book 4 in a few months.

Brilliantly Charming

Finally - an author who doesn't use cliches as a crutch...you won't find any "her eyes sparkled like a diamond" in this charming story - what you will find is an immediate like-able character in Kaylie and an author who uses description like Paula Deen uses butter (creatively and deliciously). There was "chemistry" between Kaylie and Tennessee "Ten" and instead of relying on graphic description for love scenes - the author does a great job allowing the reader to use their own imagination (I'm so tried of vulgar descriptions!). Thankfully, The Second Chance Cafe is a romantic, sweet, story with some mystery. The town was as much a character in the book and it reminded me of Stars Hollow from "Gilmore Girls."

Returning Home

I was not prepared for such a delightful and heartwarming story as the one Alison Kent has written. The Second Chance Café had me hooked from page one and hope to read many other books by her.

This book introduces, Kaylie, a foster child who has spent most of her life in foster care. After going from one foster home to another, Kalie arrives at May and Winton's home and remains their for eight years. It is the best home she has ever been placed in and now she is returning to Hope Springs with her dog Magoo, to open a café in her former home.

This story is beautifully written and you will almost think you know the characters. Life has not been easy for Kalie but she had a dream and now is trying to make it come true. She returns to the home she shared with May and Winton for eight wonderful years.

Kalyie has worked hard, graduated from college and had owned the Sweet Shoppe before returning to Hope Springs. What Kaylie is not prepared for are surprises about her past, who her parents were and why she ended up in foster care? Along the way she meets people she had gone to school with, meets new friends and might actually have time for finding "Mr Right" which is something she has never even thought about.

The Second Chance Café had me hooked from page one and hope to read many other books by her. A truly wonderful story and one I was sad to finish as I wanted more and you will too.

Good Storytelling but a Plot Problem

Three and a half stars, really.

This is my first reading of an Alison Kent book. I liked a lot about it. The town, the characters, the author's attention to detail and way of telling the story drew me in and made me want to keep reading. But I just could not get my head around one of the major premises. Why would someone who has been looking for a particular person for years not rejoice when that person is finally found? Especially if that person seems to be mentally balanced and a contributing, normal member of society. I felt the author never gave a good reason why this main plot point was one of such angst instead of happiness. Yes, she attempted to address the subject, but not when it was needed in the plot, and it was never convincing.

That aside, I enjoyed the overall story and was interesting in finding out what would happen next. I will probably read more of Alison Kent's books, and I hope the characters emotions do not end up feeling so plot-driven.

This is definitely worth a try.

Genius, relatable

I especially like this book! This is a captivating, interesting book written during Steinbeck's golden years. I haven't given 5 star reviews to some of Steinbeck's works, even those panned as his best. But this journal of his travels helps to carry me away, across the wonders of America, and the peculiarities of its varied population, and geography. I enjoyed this book and can definitely recommend it.

The author travels throughout America, one last trip in his old age, with his homemade truck and canopy outfit, and his gentle, loving dog Charley. One example that interested me was Steinbeck's detour up to Maine to visit an old colleague. It was here where he met George, an old Maine Coon cat. Steinbeck not only described the cat's antics, but he went on to elucidate upon the probable origin of this cat's wild and domestic hybrid ancestors. That's an example of Steinbeck's success at sharing experiences with information. I love it!
