White sky ("a high film of opalescent cloud... that leached all contour and distinction from the snowy landscape") and black ice ("black and perfect like ice when it was new and thin and deadly") are two aspects of the physical life in the remote Alaskan village of Chukchi, where young and ambitious state trooper Nathan Active is starting his police career. Nathan has decidedly mixed feelings about Chukchi, despite its often stunning beauty. He was born here to a 15-year-old Eskimo girl, who quickly fostered him off to a white family in Anchorage. Also, within its boundaries it contains all the problems facing native Alaskans. Entrapped by poverty and alcohol, too many of them end their lives with suicide. Even an enterprising local leader, Tom Werner, who has fought to ban alcohol and to keep a nearby copper mine open to provide jobs, can't stop two more men from killing themselves in the book's first few pages.

But to Nathan, with his outsider's sensibilities, these last two suicides look suspicious. Even though his politically disgraced superior and the local police warn him off, he stubbornly digs into the circumstances of the deaths and finds connections to the international consortium that owns the Gray Wolf copper mine.

Nathan is a fascinating character, bristling with anger against his birth mother for abandoning him, but still drawn to her and the native life. His feelings about a determined young woman called Lucy Generous are equally ambivalent: part of him loves her sexual frankness, while the other part warns him that a native wife might not help his career.

Stan Jones, an environmentalist, journalist, and bush pilot, obviously knows and loves the people and territory he writes so well about in this, his first mystery. --Dick Adler

The hero of Jones's promising first novel is Nathan Active, an Alaska state trooper. He is an Inupiat, but was given away by his mother when he was a baby, and raised by a white couple in Anchorage. Now he knows little of his background, and feels torn between two worlds. Nathan's bafflement hasn't been helped by his work assignment in Chukchi, the town in the rural northwestern corner of Alaska where he was born and where his birth mother still lives. The Inupiat townsfolk there have welcomed the opening of the Gray Wolf copper mine, as it provides jobs for young people. The number of wife-beatings and liquor-related offenses has declined dramatically. But now two local men have died in the same week, each of a gunshot wound in the throat. Locals assume that the deaths were suicides, especially as one of the young men belonged to a family whose members are subject to a curse. Nathan is not convincedAeven in suicide-prone Chukchi, men don't usually shoot themselves in the Adam's apple. While this tough, gritty mystery generates only modest suspense, its exotic setting will hold readers throughout. Jones has a real knack for depicting the daily life of a small Inupiat community, and the toll that alcoholism has taken on it.

A very well written book. I enjoyed the telling and the way it was presented. The whole thing is straightforward. The way the people speak is interesting and shows an on-site to the culture and different ways people in an area live depending on where they were raised in the beginning of their life, it also acknowledged the fact people from mixed races may have some emotional difficulty with being raised in another ethnic household.
The fact that Trouper Active remained standing until others were seated. Then commented on the way he was trained as a Trouper was the reason for this action.
I really enjoy the way the book was presented and intend. To purchase the next book in the series and would highly recommended that others purchase an read this book.
Thank you to author, Stan Jones for the hours of enjoyment I had in the reading of this book and the enjoyment I am sure to have in the reading of the next book in this series.

Bring on the next in the series

I won't go into much detail here since other reviews have done a pretty thorough job, I think. But I did really like the main character & the insertion of Inupiat language, which I'm sure is how the locals really speak. I also liked the fact that I had to google the area & look at the maps of the region, so I could learn more than I about the Chukchi Sea & peninsula.
Warning to those of you who don't like trash mouth characters There are a few choice words coming from some mouths, but I thought it was in keeping the locale & realistic language from those living in a sub Artic small town. there is also a couple of episodes of mildly graphic sex, but also fit right into the book.
Other than that..this is a great new character for me, and I will be reading more of this series.

Good Book and Could Be a Good Movie!

I loved this book; I'd be curious to know if the author has ever been approached to write a script so a movie could be made out of it. I'm a writer and editor, and I kept casting actors for the various roles in the book. I loved the pace this book maintained and character development was well done. I would make some minor changes in a script, but for the most part, this read like a book-to-movie to me. I think the author should go for it.

In 1898, St. Philip’s Normal and Industrial School opened its doors in San Antonio, offering sewing classes for black girls. It was the inaugural effort in a program, founded by the West Texas diocese of the Episcopal Church, to educate and train former slaves and other African Americans in that city.

Originally tied to St. Philip’s Church, about three miles east of the downtown center, the school grew to offer high school and then junior college courses and eventually affiliated with the San Antonio Independent School District and San Antonio College. One of the few remaining historically black junior colleges in the country, St. Philip’s, whose student body is no longer predominantly black, has also been designated a Hispanic-serving institution, one of few schools to bear both designations.

Known by many as “the school that love built,” St. Philip’s College claimed in its 1932 catalog, “There is perhaps as much romance surrounding the development of St. Philip’s Junior College as there is of the ‘Alamo City’ in which it is located.”

That love story, also containing dominant strains of sacrifice, scarcity, creativity, determination, and pride, finds its full expression in this history by Marie Pannell Thurston. Based on archival research and extensive interviews with current and former alumni, faculty, and friends, St. Philip’s College presents the heartwarming and inspiring record of a school, the community that nurtures it, and the collective pride in what the institution and its graduates have accomplished.
